When choosing where to study abroad, make sure you pick a place that is right for you, not where others think you should go. Here are some things to think about when choosing a program.
Your Priorities: What do you want to get out of studying abroad? Are there certain classes you want to be able to take? Is there a certain location you want to go? Do you want to develop or enhance language skills?
Academic Goals: What are your academic goals? Do you want to focus on requirements for your major? Do you want to fulfill language requirements? Do you want to satisfy general education requirements?
Professional Goals. What are your professional goals? Would learning a language be useful in your career? What location of study will be most useful in your future career, or most impressive to an employer?
Money Matters: How much can you afford? What is included in the program costs? What is the exchange rate?
Cultural Attraction: Is there a country or culture you’ve always been drawn to and fascinated by?
Interests: What do you like to do? Are those activities available in the country you are considering?
Know Yourself: How independent are you? Do you want to study abroad with several people you know or by yourself? How well do you adjust to new situations?
Do not choose a program just because:
All your friends are going there.
Someone you know went there and really liked it.
It has a great party atmosphere.
